Second Qualifying
Session - Saturday
5:09
p.m. Weather conditions: relative humidity 64 percent, barometer
29.87 inches, track temperature 81 degrees.
 The
first pair out were not in the show. Rick Rogers and Mendy Fry.
 Rogers
car left better than session one.
 And
it looked like Fry's team went too far the other way as she smoked
the tire before the 60' mark. Try as she did, the car didn't
recover enough to make the show. Her 7.766 at 175.88 was a mile
off the pace.
 On the
other hand, Rogers stepped up to a 6.104 at 250.34 which would
put him in the show.
 Pair
two was Jack Harris and Mark Malde and neither were in.
 Both
cars got off the line clean.
 Harris
stepped up to a 5.932 at 230.65 but it cost them a bunch of parts
as there was a big flash at about 1000' and the car was rolling
away behind a wall of smoke. Malde vanished behind a similar
wall of smoke but improved to a 6.135 at 233.03 that would temporarily
(key word) put him in the show.
 Next
out to take advantage of the cooler air was Brett Harris and
Troy Green (who was not qualified). Both cars were aggressive
on the bottom.
 There
was a short fuse in the High Speed car but Green slotted in behind
Brad Thompson with the second quick ET and second fastest MPH
to this point (5.830 at 251.04). There was a lot of smoke from
the engine at the stripe, but that seems par for the course on
a good run these days. Harris was about a tenth behind at every
mark before he clicked it just after half track to a 6.497 at
164.02.
 Next
up was Jim Murphy who was sitting # 3 and Rick McGee who was
on the outside looking in.
 Murphy
told me they "hopped it up some" and it was sure stout
on the leave.
 It appeared
that the boys from Exter are still having problems in the clutch
can. The car was again soft at the hit.
 Murphy
never missed a lick and the green car fell just short of Thompson's
# 1 number with a 5.774 at 257.43 (top speed to this point).
McGee was hurting parts at the stripe but a 6.123 at 244.23 put
him on the bubble.
Pair five pitted Pete Kaiser and Howard
Haight.
 Just
after the his Haight yanked the front wheels way up in the air
to about 330ft and plopped it down and coasting out.
 Check
out the distortion in the right rear tire!
 Kaiser
laid down another good number (5.894 at 243.83) but hurt the
engine in the process.
With the bump spot at a 6.12 John Shoemaker
had one last shot. Rick White was firmly in the show.
 At the
hit White moved hardest by far.
 Shoemaker
was chasing his ride all the way down as he was really getting
looser and looser and he clicked it to a 7.035 at 147.20. No
need to unload the car on Sunday.
 White
motored away to improve with a 5.929 at 244.16 and a berth in
the top half of the field.
 Before
the largest crowd ever at a CHRR out came Scott Mason and Mike
McClennan.
 McLennan
had a chute rattle out of the pack on the burnout and Blake Bowser
managed to stop him before he backed up over it. He was forced
to just motor on down to the first turnout.
 Mason,
with both chutes where they belong, left about as hard as a Chevy
can.
 Mason
appeared to be on a pretty nice lap but lifted at around 1000ft.
to a 6.480 at 168.09 which would not improve his position.
 The
seventh pair of session to was Jason Richey and Adam Sorokin
who was not in the show.
 Nothing
was wrong with either cars leave.
 Richey
went right down the groove to improve with a 5.939 at 228.19.
 But
it was Sorokin who opened eyes as he jumped from # 19 to # 3
with an outstanding 5.816 at 239.61.
 The next
pair was another have and have not. Brendan Murry was not in
and Shannon Stewart who was secured in the field.
 At the
hit it looked like Stewart was doing another burnout. Apparently
Bob Richardson put his rotate the earth tune-up into action.
Run scrubbed.
 Murry
left okay but the early numbers didn't support a time good enough
to qualify.
 Murry's
Chevy was good for about 1100' and all he could muster was a
6.241 at 220.04. Nonetheless, it was great to see him back in
the seat.
 The
final car to take a shot at the track before Cacklefest was Denver
Schutz.
 Schutz
had a strong leave and legged it to a 5.901 at 244.03 which was
a good number but didn't improve on his earlier 5.88.
