2010 March Meet

2nd Qualifying Session

Saturday: The forecasted rain never came but neither did much sun. The track was better than Friday in the heart of the day, but once again, due to a trouble plagued funny car session, cooled down a bunch by the time Top Fuel got their 2nd and last chance to make the show.

Note: These pages are very graphic intense. If you are using an un-blown computer you should clear your RAM and browser history or all the photos may not load.

In spite of threats of rain and jacket weather the crowd was unexpectedly large.

First out was the maiden run of the brand new Horan & Burgan entry with Dan Horan Jr. in the seat. The "Rooman" car did everything it was suppose to and after this shake down Keith Burgan will get his licence and do the driving while Horan supplys the horsepower.

The first pair to test the cold track were Terry Cox and Mark Malde and neither were qualified.

Both cars had good leaves but for Cox his was short lived.

Before the tree Cox's car started a hard move to the left.

He got out of it and made a hard right but the momentum was too much.

The car hit the wall with a substantial whack with the rear tire taking the brunt of the blow.

Malde legged it through to a nice, clean 6.201 at 229.18. This jumped him all the way up to the #2 spot and incredibly would be the low ET of the session.

Cox coasted though and would be one of the three cars that failed to qualify.

The damage appeard to be minimal but they won't know until the car is apart and put on the jig.

With the track getting cooler by the minute, the second pair was Lincoln Hassell and Shannon Stewart.

Just trying to get down the track, both cars left soft but clean.

But as soon as Hassell's SBC car plyed the clutch the tires lost traction and after one quick pedal he clicked it.

Stewart had troubles as well but further down track.

In spite of junk runs both cars improved over their Friday times. Hassell moved from 16 to 14 with at 9.467 and Steward went from 13 to 9 with a 7.069.

Next out was the 2009 CHRR champ Rick McGee and Randy Eakins.

As was the case with most all the cars, these left good but got into trouble before the 60' clocks.

Before the tree McGee was whisping the tires.

Just past the tree both cars starting smoking the tires hard.

McGee did a masterful pedal job and got the car to hook up before the 330' mark. Eakins was done and would fail to qualify.

In spite of smoking the tires and losing a blower belt at the 1000' mark McGee carded a respectable (conditions considered) 6.72 at 212 to take the #7 spot.

Next out was Adam Sorokin in the most photographed car of the weekend and Rick Rogers.

Look carefully under Fugowie's engine ... that is not a water leak.

Rogers was removed from the car and Sorokin was givin a single.

Following suit of those before him, Sorokin started blazing the tires before the 330' mark.

Like McGee, Sorokin did a nice pedal job and carried on.

And like McGee he was done early but not because of damage. His 7.635 would land him the the #11 hole.

The bleeding Fugowie would facilitate a long clean up and put the final nail in the coffin for the track this day.

After the 20 minute clean up, out came Mike Chrisman and Howard Haight.

Before the tree it was over for both drivers.

Haight's car made a move for the wall and Chrisman experienced severe tire shake.

Coasting through Haight would end up #12 and Chrisman #15.

After a wild ride in the right lane Friday, Brad Thompson was back to give the left lane a shot. James Day was in the right lane.

For Thompson another good launch and early numbers were for naught.

Day's car was soft just trying to get down the track.

Before the 330' mark the tires spun hard and Thompson was out of the groove again only this time to the left.

Thompson got close to the wall again only this time there was no attempt to recover.

Day was having problems of his own going left as well.

Both Thompson and Day coasted through. To illustrate just how tough getting down the track in quaifying was, Thompson held on to the #10 spot with his first session 7.23.

Brendan Murry and Denver Schutz were the next pair of Guinea Pigs.

Schutz hazed the tires before the tree while Murry looked like he may get past the 60' mark.

Before half track Schutz got out of the groove and started flirting with the centerline.

How close can you get!

Not one to ever give up, Schutz stabbed it again and salvaged a 6.81 at 233.88. Not bad considering all the trouble he had.

Murry clicked it early and did not improve on his Friday time.

The next to last pair was Rick Williamson and Mike McClennan. I was shooting top end so I'm not sure what happened but neither car made the run after their burnouts.

The final pair was the two "big dogs" - Rick White and Jim Murphy.

Both cars left hard but by the tree Murphy was smoking the tires.

Going through a bunch of clutch, White nearly made the 330' mark before he started hazing the tires.

White gave it one more stab before calling it quits.

Both cars coasted through standing on their Friday times. Murphy was #1 and White #3. Malde was sandwiched between them at #2.
