FUEL - ROUND TWO
The first pair
out for Round 2 was Rick White and Adam Sorokin. After setting
low ET of the meet in round one White was the odds on favorite.
However, this would prove to be one of the most pivotal races
of the event and prove once again that races should never be
run on paper.
The chink in
Rick White's armor is his reaction times and it bit him here.
Sorokin drilled the tree (.036 to .159) and left White seeing
green.
With
over a tenth in the bank Sorokin had a car length lead by the
330' mark.
Running of the
edge of the groove, under a full head of steam (on a monster
run), Sorokin experienced a violent blower explosion at the 1000'
mark. All things being equal that would have spelled defeat for
the RB car.
This is what
a big holeshot will do for you. Sorokin still managed to hold
on by half a car.
With the crowd
still buzzing over the previous race out came Denver Schutz and
Rick Rogers.
Both
drivers left together with Schutz getting the early lead.
By half
track Schutz had a commanding lead.
No contest
- Schutz 5.881 at 248.61.
Rogers
clicked it to a 6.115 at 238.22.
The third
pair pitted Brad Thompson and Mark Malde.
Thomson
left first by a tick and never looked back.
It was all Thompson
with a 5.942 at 236.53. Malde gave up the chase with a 6.432
at 177.44.
The final pair
of the round was Rick Williamson and Howard Haight. Judging by
their times in round one this was a toss up.
Haight absolutely
welded a sleeping Williamson to the tree (.088 to .228) and was
long gone.
By half track
Williamson had made up a little ground but Haight wasn't missing
a beat.
In the
end Williamson ran out of track and Haight took the holeshot
win to move on.
