Funny Car & All Winners

The Nostalgia Funny Cars, ran in a "Chicago style" match race. Bucky Austin took the honors in the "Northwest Hitter" over Terry Capp in "Bubble Up". In Chicago style racing, only the top eight qualifiers advance to eliminations. Here, 16 cars ran for times, sending eight home after just one run. The eight-fastest ran again, with Capp and Austin the two quickest winners, advancing to the final. Capp defeated NHRA Big Show star Ron Capps, taking a brief break from the Countdown to One. Capps' POWERade Series crew chief was CHRR Reunion Grand Marshal Ed "The Ace" McCulloch. Here are some flopper shots in no particular order and some of the cars may not be represented.

A view from the stands as the floppers rolled out for their first session.

Eventual winner Bucky Austin who was the only FC to dip into the fives.

Austin beat Terry Capp in the final 5.915 at 242.98 (top FC speed) to a 6.106 at 237.65.

Mike Savage in the Arizona based Speed Sport flopper.

In the 8 car elimination round Mike Savage experienced a top end fire that was quickly handled by the Safety Safari.

Dennis La Charite in his Back in Black GTO.

Sean Dale was in the seat of Shaky Situation.

The Edmonton, Canada based Bubble Up - Pacemaker Firebird of Ron Hodgson was one of the fan favorites for sure. Terry Capp drove the car to the runner-up spot to Austin.

Big Show Alcohol Funny Car driver Rian Konno got his first shot at a nitro car in the Crazy Horse.

Konno's first and only shot at the track was a rough one. He drifted left and took out the 330' light block. But he reeled it in an coasted through. Rian's a good shoe so I'm sure he'd get the hang for this different animal in a hurry.

Another car that got a lot of attention was the new "Future Flash" entry that was driven here by NHRA shoe, Ron Capps. The car ran good but not good enough to make the final.

The always stout Code Red car driven by Lee Jennings Jr. was also a player but not one of the two quickest.

The Predator was another who missed the show.

Dan Horan's different and distinctive Mustang.

Tim Hanaseth caught Dan Kaplan shooting the flops from the topend.

Jeff Utterback put on a great show in the Pisano & Matsubara tribute car.

The one major incident of the event was a horrendous fire endured by Randy Walls in his 1969 Nova. Since Randy escaped this inferno with only two very minor burns we will publish a full page of extraordinary pictures by several photographers of one of the longest and most intense fires ever seen on a drag strip. This is a recording - Scott Parks wins Jr. Fuel 'A'.

The seemingly unbeatable Parks got the better of J.D. Zink (again) with the quickest pass ever in the class - a stunning 6.881 at 193.46.

This is another recording - John Rasmussen wins Jr. Fuel 'B'.

Rasmussen's 7.177 at 187.07 was just good enough to beat Fred Notkza's 7.199 at 185.33.

Tom Schiffilea and crew are happy campers after their A/Gas win.

Schiffilea scored a convincing win over Ray Martin with a 8.025 at 144.43.

Ronnie Lennon and crew should be happy - they whipped a stout 32 car field in NE-1.

Two "Old Style" Altereds were finalist in Nostalgia Eliminator. John Leso had a carburated Big Block and Ronnie Lennon had the blown small block. Lennon got off the line just ahead of Leso, but Leso had better numbers until half track. He gave it up early around the 1000 foot lights and Lennon took the win.
